Give credit where credit is due
I was going through Instagram last night, when I came across a very well know artist, discussing their views on people using their work for tattoos. I myself wrote a blog on the subject last year when two women were having a discussion openly on my Instagram page about one of my mixed media pieces.
These two women were discussing back and forth one of my mixed media pieces as possibly one of their new tattoos. The piece they were discussing was the girl you see in this picture to the left. I just thought it was interesting that they were having this discussion not only on my account, but on my picture. And never did either contact me to ask my permission to use my work as a tattoo. I didn't care if they used it as a tattoo. I just would have liked it if they had posted a picture if they had used it as a tattoo, crediting me as the artist. And maybe not have a public discussion on my picture about using my work without clearing it with me first. It feels weird and a little disrespectful when people are talking about using something you made right in front of you/on your page as if you don't exist.
I told a few friends about it and a few thought I was overreacting. I was going through all the comments left for the other more well know artist who talked about their views on the subject and saw a lot of people seem to agree with my thoughts. When I posted about this subject last year, I guess because I don't have as big a following as this other person does no one commented on the subject which at the time left me feeling like I was overreacting. But then seeing all the comments last night on the other persons post reassured me I wasn't making a big deal out of it. It's interesting to me seeing how differently people approach this subject depending on the notability of the artist!
